I offer a number of unique demonstrations, all of which can be done in person or as a live virtual demonstration conducted over Zoom. I've demonstrated for clubs all over the country as well as for both regional and national symposia. I've also taught hands-on classes around the country, including a class on making my signature Saturn Bowl with rotating ring. A partial list of demonstrations is include below. All day live demonstrations are welcome, and typically include 3 topics: Multi-axis with a twist, Unconventional Hollowing: Turning the Torus, and Return of Saturn: Saturn bowl with rotating disk.
Return of Saturn: Saturn bowl with a rotating disk
This demonstration will be focused on turning what I call a Saturn Bowl. The demo will start with a Powerpoint presentation that previews the project and gives some background on the history and evolution of the idea. I will then walk the attendees through the process of turning a simple bowl with a wide thin flat rim and use the ultra-thin parting tool to cut the rim in such a way that is free from the bowl and is able to rotate. I will then turn a simple jig so that the wide rim of the bowl can be turned off center in order to create rings that can rotate and are interactive. This appears to be a very challenging piece to turn but the process to be demonstrated actually makes it relatively simple. The demonstration will end with another Powerpoint with additional samples, ideas, and inspiration as well as a very brief sales pitch for a corresponding step by step booklet and PDF that I will make available to club members at a discounted price.
The demonstration typically runs approximately 90-120 minutes and is available in person or as an interactive virtual demonstration presented via Zoom.
Beyond the Basket Illusion. This demonstration will be focused on turning what I call a Saturn Illusion bowl, a Basket Illusion with a twist, one or more pairs of cuts are made that allow the groups of rings to rotate and the pattern displayed to change. Attendees will be taken through the various stages of turning a Saturn Illusion bowl, including design, turning, indexing, burning, and applying the pattern. Due to the complexity and length of the total process it's not possible to complete an entire piece in the time given but small vignettes of the various stages will be demonstrated. This demonstration typically runs approximately 90-120 minutes and is available in person or as an interactive virtual demonstration presented via Zoom.
Unconventional Hollowing - Turning the Torus:
This demonstration covers the evolution of an idea the process of turning a Torus (donut) shaped hollow form covering an unconventional approach to hollowing as well as methods for chucking and reverse chucking including a unique double walled vacuum drum.
This demonstration typically runs approximately 90 minutes and is available in person or as an interactive virtual demonstration presented via Zoom.
Multi-Axis with a twist:
This demonstration will start with some simpler multi axis spindles to explain the basic approach to multi axis turning before moving on to the creation of a multi-axis lidded box turned so that the outside of box has 3 distinct faces that twist 120 degrees along the length of the box. A simple process for the layout of the center points that induce the twist will be demonstrated, including being able to control the direction of the twist. In the interest of time the inside of the lidded box will have been turned prior to the demo. All of the basic steps for turning the box will be discussed but will not be demonstrated.
This demonstration typically runs approximately 90 minutes and is available in person or as an interactive virtual demonstration presented via Zoom.
Neo Traditional Christmas ornaments:
This demonstration includes the process for turning 2 unique Christmas tree ornaments that differ from the typical globe and icicle style. The first is turned from a cube that's mounted on the bias (corner to corner rather than face to face). This results in an orament that has 6 points, 3 that curve up and 3 that curve down. The second ornament is comprised of a pair of small bowls with a groove around the rim, this groove is used to house multiple small basswood strips that comprise the rest of the body. Lastly finial design and turning techniques will be discussed and demonstrated.
This demonstration typically runs approximately 90 minutes and is available in person or as an interactive virtual demonstration presented via Zoom.
